Some commentators originally suggested that affiliate links work best in the context of the information contained within the website itself. For instance, if a website contains information pertaining to publishing a website, an affiliate link leading to a merchant's internet service provider (ISP) within that website's content would be appropriate. If a website contains information pertaining to sports, an affiliate link leading to a sporting goods website may work well within the context of the articles and information about sports. The goal, in this case, is to publish quality information on the website and provide context-oriented links to related merchant's websites.

Most affiliate marketers concentrate their efforts heavily on SEO to gain traffic for their site so, if you want to become a successful affiliate marketer, you’ll need to become an SEO shark. Affiliate marketing is becoming more popular, so if you want to get one of those coveted top three spots, you’ll need to learn how to outrank your competition. Personally, I favor white hat SEO over black hat as I believe it’s more sustainable plus, as an affiliate marketer, if you create content that is hugely resourceful, it’s going to keep visitors on your site longer. They are going to be more likely to click on your affiliate links resulting in revenue for you. I also believe that you should concentrate heavily on building a list because, if your site does eventually get penalized, you can still generate revenue by sending offers out to your list.
If you have built up an email list, you could also promote your affiliate offers via email promotions. Just make sure you build up a relationship with your audience first instead of going for the hard sell straightaway. The emails you send out must contain your affiliate links to products so when your audience click through. the sale is attributed to you. 
You need to make sure that the product or service you’re affiliated with is something you really believe in. It’d be easy to just form a partnership on the basis of making an easy buck, but what does that say about your brand? Before you shake hands and sign contracts, ask yourself if this is a product or service you would want yourself. If not, just look for the next opportunity. Building relationships with a company that you would stand by as a customer will provide authenticity and integrity to your brand, and that builds invaluable loyalty.

Always disclose your affiliations. Your readers will appreciate your honesty and will feel better about contributing to your earnings. If they sense that you are being less than honest about your affiliations, they are savvy enough to bypass your link and go directly to the vendor just to avoid giving you referral credit (even though the price is the same it's just something people do; strange but true!).
Cost per action/sale methods require that referred visitors do more than visit the advertiser's website before the affiliate receives a commission. The advertiser must convert that visitor first. Say it costs you $1 to send a visitor to your site, but each visitor on average earns you $2 in affiliate commissions. You, my friend, have a money machine on your hands.
The easiest and most common way to start building an audience for a website is via social media. Depending on your niche and industry, you can choose from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and several other niche and location-specific networks. Building up an engaged and interested following on social media is a great opportunity to build relationships and once you have their trust, promote your products and services to them. 
Be sure to check what kind of customer support you can expect from your affiliate program once you have signed up. Do your research online and if possible, speak to other sellers using the program to get their thoughts. Can you speak to someone via phone or Skype or do you have to wait 72 hours for email responses? Be clear on this because trust me, you will need support at one point or another. 
Monster-Traffic is another traffic exchange, though it’s initially a little off-putting due to the 1995-style website. It’s a free for all styled advertising list, where anyone signing up becomes part of the audience and an advertiser at the same time. You sign up and you can enter a link into their system, and that link is added to a roster that is send out to every member of the group. Additionally, registration allows a free solo ad; an ad that isn’t drowned out by other advertisers in that mailer.
